This good prognosis, however, does not appear to hold if there are ongoing seizures or if the brain damage is bilateral.

When the left hemisphere is damaged, however, the right hemisphere is released from inhibition, allowing it to assume a greater role in language function. The critical period for this release may be only up to 2–4 years of age. A number of different factors have been identified by various authors that may influence the prognosis of acquired childhood aphasia. The wide diversity of causes, severities of aphasia and length of follow-up in the various studies of acquired childhood aphasia, make it difficult to determine which of these factors are the most important in determining the final outcome of the aphasia (Van Dongen and Loonen, 1977).

The complete recovery of naming abilities in the head-injured population is in contrast to the findings of Jordan et al. 3). Differences in naming abilities between subjects with right and left hemisphere lesions and control groups have been investigated by several other authors. Also using the Boston Naming Test, Kiessling, et al.
