Conclusion There are a number of interrelated factors that impact people with disabilities as they transition through life stages. Many people with disabilities continue to experience exclusion and discrimination from birth and childhood, through adulthood, to aging and dying. As a result, increasing effectiveness of support and policies across the life course becomes vital if people with disabilities and their families are to achieve a good quality of life and participate in the wider community.

However, the homogeneity of groups such as Baby Boomers and Generation X remains contested, and the level of interaction between the generational groups largely underestimated (Goodwin & O’Connor, 2009). Since youth with disabilities often have limited access to peers who have disabilities, they may feel pressured to choose between their identity as a person with a disability and their youth identity (Priestley, 2004). Identity development is generally heightened during adolescence, when individuals develop a sense of self and a personal value system (Muuss, 1996).

Erikson Introduction, Background, and History╇╇ 17 contended that development occurs in eight basic stages, and that development does not end after childhood, but continues throughout adult life. Like Freud, Erikson saw each stage as consisting of a basic conflict that either positively or negatively influenced an individual’s personality development. His stages are roughly linked to chronological ages and include: trust versus mistrust; autonomy versus shame and doubt; initiative versus guilt; industry versus inferiority; identity versus role confusion; intimacy versus isolation; generativity versus stagnation; and ego integrity versus despair (Sigelman & Rider, 2009).
