When the morula enters the uterine cavity 5 or more days after ovulation, the surface cells differentiate from those in the centre to form the trophoblast, while within, a cavity, the blastocoele, appears leaving a cluster of cells at one pole. This cluster is the inner cell mass, and the whole structure is now the blastocyst. A few days later two cavities appear in the inner cell mass, the amniotic cavity and the yolk sac. The inner cell mass has become differentiated into two layers, the outer of ectodermal cells and the inner layer of smaller endodermal cells (Figure 17).
