Symptom A symptom is a departure from any normal state of structure or function that is experienced by the patient. In other words, something is wrong and the patient knows it. Symptoms may develop slowly, almost imperceptibly, as in a slow-growing tumor or as part of the aging process, or appear suddenly, as in hemorrhage or trauma.
