There are several industrial hazards of radioactivity through air pollution. Machining of radioactive materials can lead to the inhalation of dust. Processing of radioactive gases can lead to radiation exposure directly or through inhalation. The mining and processing of U ore to metal is an example. Through gas or dust there may be a hazard from 222Rn and through dust there is a hazard from 235U and 238u. The established AEC procedures are quite detailed and adequate for all such hazards. For ingestion of natural uranium the critical organ is the kidney.
Forest and vegetation produce more aerosols from the terpenes emitted than does man from his gaseous emissions. Except in certain urban regions man cannot compete with natural sources of aerosols and can do little about the blue haz·;! that persists over much of the continents.
