One small group of marginalized girls contests this state of affairs; while they are not able to achieve anything in the way of a transformation, they are able to achieve academic success, and therefore to show that it is possible to achieve what all students are after without engaging in the prevailing discourse on gender. At the same time, their acceptance of their marginalization forces them to deal on their own not only with academic success, but with their feelings about what it might mean to be French.

These meetings were called by the student council on a regular basis, in order to prepare for upcoming events. They almost always took the form of skits (short theatrical sketches). They also were held in order to prepare for annual student council elections. These events were the ones which were most extensively controlled by the students themselves. In addition, the school would sometimes call an assembly. One principal did this on a variety of occasions (perhaps two or three times a year), in order to talk to the students about his plans and concerns.

The first has to do with the funding of the separate system. Initially, secondary education ended at Grade 10 (students are now usually about 15 years old in that grade). Eventually, the high school system was extended to Grade 13. However, the Protestant-dominated provincial government did not wish to supply additional funds for Catholic education. As a result, it became possible to attend public high schools free of charge through Grade 13, while state funding for separate schools remained frozen at Grade 10.
