It is then important that we ask about permeability of the divides and differences that make the task of mediation necessary. To what extent does the untranslatability of the repetition at work in poetic speech mark an impenetrable moment, the point at which mediation becomes refusal? Put yet another way: what must be said about the largest mediating potential, ultimately the "fusion of horizons"-the most Hegelian moment in Gadamer if we radicalize such fissures and fissions in language that are pried open in the interstices of language at the point of untranslatability?

And who we are not. The revealing difficulty in translating the passage from Sophocles that Heidegger takes as the conducting wire of his remarks on the possibility of translation comes in the word " to deinon," and more interesting even than the word itself is our failure today to find the word again that names its truth. There is, he says, a lack of words, a shortage, one curiously instituted, then helped along, by the translation of Greek thought into Latin-a translation that Heidegger characterized as the most fateful moment in the formation of Western thoughtl 1-and this shortage in contemporary Western languages says much about who we are and can be today.

That comment was made by Heidegger in the course of a semester-long lecture on Holderlin's poetry. " Hearing those different translations and noticing the slippage between them, one is drawn to the play of abundance and poverty of the three languages crossing one another. At their disjunction, in the midst of the slippage that each translation signals, it seems as if the thought itself cannot be wrested free of any language yet remains up for grabs in that crossing. In that relay of passages, one senses the provisionality of every translation.
