Not accustomed. The desserts and cakes were often stale. After a two-day flight over the Atlantic Ocean, the Hindenburg approached the United States on the morning of May 6, 1937. The flight had been normal, and there were no major mechanical problems. The weather had been less than ideal, but it posed little problem for the airship’s captains. The strong headwinds put the Hindenburg only a little behind schedule. More than anything, the fog simply allowed for less sightseeing than usual. The passengers awoke that morning eager to make their landing.
Other countries also had airships. Britain had approximately 200 nonrigid airships, or blimps, during the war. But unlike Germany, other countries used their airships mainly for defensive purposes. Although Germany’s airships did not inflict much physical damage, they became effective on a psychological level. “Baby Killers” The first zeppelin air raids were unsuccessful, but they attracted attention. England used the air raids to help recruit men to join the army. They publicized the zeppelins as “baby killers” because the attacks hurt innocent civilians.
Essential Events The Nazis suspected that if a bomb were placed inside the Hindenburg, it would likely have been put there by a crew member. They used their own men to search the airship. However, the security troops were unfamiliar with the enormous airship. If a bomb were inside the Hindenburg, it was unlikely that the security troops would find anything. Because the hydrogen gas cells were already inflated at the time of the search, it would have been impossible for the troops to reach several parts of the airship.
