Capital's tendency, as soon as a prolongation of the hours of labour is once for all forbidden, is to compensate for this by systematically raising the intensity of labour, and converting every improvement in machinery into a more perfect means for soaking up labour-power. There cannot be the slightest doubt that this process must soon lead once again to a critical point at which a further reduction in the hours of labour will be inevitable. (Marx 1976: 542) Despite the prophetic and material nature of Marx's argument, it has not attracted much attention from modern scholars.

His rejection of the central elements in Smith's contribution to worktime theory, however, did not mean Jevons totally abandoned the whole of the classical economists' approach to this issue. He retained, for example, their preference for concentrating on the individual, rather than the production process, as the primary locus of analysis. Likewise, he adopted their policy of lauding those worktime laws already established which had not proven overly harmful to employers as examples of the benefits of capitalism while at the same time insisting that any extension of these laws should be opposed.

The second major economic tradition to emerge in the last half of the nineteenth century, namely marginalism, on the other hand, has shown a marked tendency to play down the human-capacities and income-preference aspects of Smith's argument. The marginalists rather chose to abandon Smith's path and revert to the preclassical assumption that the major factor causing worktimes to contract was the personal preference of individuals for leisure over income. The working classes' insistence that a legal limit be placed on the working day made it difficult for the marginalist tradition to retain a concept of the worker as an individual forever seeking to maximise the length of time spent at work in order to gain more income.
