However, this creates a problem around the refusal to acknowledge the profound influence that the ideology of the family and the separate spheres have on human agency and the nature of society in late modernity. Giddens identifies a new form of intimacy that is composed of the notion of the ‘pure relationship’ and ‘confluent love’. The pure relationship is defined as a social relationship developed by a couple for its own sake and continued ‘only in so far as it is thought by both parties to deliver enough satisfactions for each individual to stay within it’ (Giddens, 1992: 58).

What is most important about Giddens’ approach is that he sees the family as a site for the democratisation of intimate relationships and a platform on which debates about moralities and ethics are staged. There are problems with his argument concerning the lack of detail about the structural inequalities and differences of class, gender, race, first and third world. But he does claim to be aware of the differential access to the resources allowing ‘lifestyle’ choices upon which the project of the self and the construction of the democratic pure relationship depend.

The nineteenth-century origins of myths and definitions of ‘family’ and ‘household’, which continue to be in circulation today, were formed in this period. I identify the sources of public, academic and popular cultural representations of the white nuclear family as morally superior, as a ‘functional family’. The mythologies of Victorian ethics obscured the power relations between the sexes, races and the public state within the structuring of a dominant version of the private, middle-class, white nuclear family.
