For the Hammersmith, the most important was the concept of a Federation for Postgraduate Hospitals. 7 Peacetime Hammersmith As the transition from war to peace accelerated, the number of doctors at the Hammersmith increased tenfold. Service doctors, on demobilization, were offered posts for 6 months equivalent to Registrar status and pay in the specialty they had been studying before the war as part of their re-education to civilian life and in lieu of a 'gratuity' for service to their country.
The second mistake was also to do with the Readers. The Dean was not familiar with the machinery of the university and discovered by chance that the university had to establish the post of Readership before a Reader could be appointed.
