This is in contrast to what she called the paranoid-schizoid position, in which splitting and projection predominate. These terms are used to describe not a linear development, but two states of mind between which we oscillate throughout life. Put simply, in a paranoid-schizoid state of mind, anxiety is high and thinking is difficult, whereas in the depressive position, anxiety is manageable and there is mental space for taking in new experiences, for learning.

Oedipal concerns and ideas about separation, loss, and sibling rivalry (real or imagined siblings) get acted out and rendered less frightening in the process. Children try out all kinds of identifications—playing the role of mother, father, baby, policeman, doctor, super-hero, and many more. Freud wrote about this period in Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905d) as being when “sexuality normally advances no further”. It is a period of repression of instincts (not just sexual ones but aggressive ones too) and organization of defences, which gives the child a degree of stability. Interestingly, such is the power of repression in this period that many people find it hard to recall the detail of these years in later life.
