I am speaking here of the philosopher Peter Singer and of the embryologist Alan Trounson, who both worked at Monash University in Melbourne in the State of Victoria. In 1979 Peter Singer published his well-known book Practical Ethics (1979, Cambridge University Press), which repositioned the ethical discourse on fundamental questions related to life and death, animal rights, and the introduction of suffering as a moral category capable of providing moral justification for the elimination of human life before and after birth.
