Through Rizal’s establishment of an early nationalist organization, Los Indios Bravos, Rizal co-opted the image of American Indians in order to overthrow Spanish colonial hegemony over Filipino indios. S. government invoked each other at cross-purposes in the struggle to wrest the Philippines from one colonial master, on the one hand, and reestablish it under another colonial master, on the other. The differing ways in which Rizal-as-national-hero have been constructed by both the Philippine and American governments—and Rizal’s own integral role in defining Filipino nationalism—reveal the multivalent ways in which Filipino history and identity have been actively constructed by both Americans and Filipinos.

The Wild West functioned as a palimpsest, a performative narrative in which nationhood and historical hegemony were contested. S. exportation of the Indian Wars across the Pacific following the “closing” of the frontier. S. and Philippine nations’ constructions of the Indian brave forecast the two countries’ future military conflict: the United States, through the nationalist narrative of Manifest Destiny, constructed the figure of the Indian as subjected to colonial nationalism, while Filipinos constructed the figure of the “indio bravo” as a figure of anticolonial nationalism.

On a figurative and potentially even a literal level, José Rizal gave a name to the Filipino people. Yet even as Rizal’s dominance of the Philippine national pantheon reached an apex in the movement to rename every Filipino a Rizalino, there has been for some time a movement to depose him as the preeminent national hero. In recent years, Rizal’s role as the Philippine national hero has been challenged by many people and for many reasons.
