What I gave that boy was this book. (48iii) jisee mai nee woh kitaab di woh yeh laRkaa thaa. the one to whom I gave that book was this boy. (5li) *jo mai nee darwaazee ko diyaa woh dhakkaa thaa. what I gave the door was a push. (48iii) which is the only c1ause above with the feature benefactive is related to a c1ause such as mai nee woh kitaab is laRkee ko di thi (I had given that book to this boy); that in some sense kitaab in this c1ause and khiRkiyaa in (48) are alike is shown by the fact that both (48i) and (48ii) are unacceptable.

Usually an interrogative locative immediately precedes the verbal group; this is the unmarked order of occurrence for an interrogative locative, as shown by the above example as weIl as by laRki nee kitaab kahM paRhi? ). Again, if kahM functions as an interrogative locative in the latter clause, it will carry the tonic. In interpretation (ii) of (20v) the tonic will be carried by some other item than kahM. If it is carried by bacca, the implication is that some one else has gone to sleep but not the child; if it is carried by soyaa, the implication is the child is doing something else, not sleeping.
