It is therefore not surprising that anti-capitalist views, along with outlined alternatives to capitalism, are not a strong feature of mainstream European media content, however much the financial crisis of 2008–9 has generated commentary and opinion pieces which connect with an extended range of economic thinking.

Measuring this support through public opinion research is controversial (not least because of the nature of a proportion of this research as a promotional tool for elites), but the existence of an emerging (or residual) body of non-elite thinking might be seen as a precondition for media coverage, let alone the possibility of some level of media alignment. 12 What can happen here is that non-elite ideas grow to the point where their articulation in the media leads, along with other factors, to their taking up (albeit with revision) by groups within the elite, followed by their appearance within inter-elite debate and perhaps finally within dominant elite policy.
